As stated in the article, abortion apparently leads to excommunication. This in turn means that not any priest can forgive you for the act of abortion because being excomunicated means you lose rights as a member of any religious sect. Forgiveness for an abortion is usally done only by a Bishop, but that has changed somewhat over the last ew years.

That is the whole pint of this 'year of mercy'. It is the Pope basically saying that any priest can forgive anyone seeking forgiveness for having had an abortion. 

This will only apply to anyone who feels they want forgiveness for an abortion 8that is anyone who still has guilt over it). Obviously if you are not looking for forgiveness from God or whoever, then this message from the Pope has no real bearing on you. 

While God may forgive, its not a one way road. The act of seeking forgiveness, from confession, is what allows you to 'atone' for your sins so to speak. 

But I really don't think that makes much sense. To me it sounds contradictory. I don't see how they can believe that the blood of Christ washes away all your sins if you believe and that you have to ask a priest to get your sins absolved. 

You can't expect too much from people who eats shellfish and cuts their hair.
