Well, objectively, the typical jRPG only has disadvantages compared to wRPGs in design. And jRPGs are not more story-centric than wRPGs, just the storytelling structures are different.

As for interchangeable "qualities", Bioware has clearly shifted on a smaller sized side-world with Kotor and Mass Effect, and in Kotor the story is almost completely linear. Both Kotor and Mass Effect also have little "true choices", which means there are little consequences from your actions.

On the Japanese side, Infinite Undiscovery apparently will have some real choices that impact the story, but we're not sure yet.
