You clearly didn't give him a chance at all if that's what you got out of his work, because 90% of his work talks nothing about his ego.

That may be the case. I am not into rap at all. The critical acclaim for one of his albums made me curious and I gave it a listen. Basic lyricism and trashy lines was all I heard. The first track alone made me chuckle at how numbingly lame the lyrics were. Maybe some of the songs had some messages but most of the time they are wrapped in cheap auto-tune and punch lines.
