I feel for him. He sold his masterpiece, and now he has nothing to do with his life. He has everything he could ever want, except for work. Some (I would say most) people need to have to work towards something in order to have a fulfilling life, I'd imagine I might get somewhat depressed in his situation too.

Wouldn't the most obvious thing to do be to try and exceed that? Saying 'I've already created the best thing I possibly could and won't be able to do any better so won't even bother trying to out do it' seems awfully defeatist to me.

Seems he was coping with depression already, a clean break and securing the future of his employees didn't solve it. He has plenty of time to get over it. Blaming his billions for his depression is just being in denial of whatever the real issues are. Money doesn't buy happiness, just infinite more ways to find it... Get creative.

It almost seems that he signed away his ability to do work with some type of eternal or timed non-compete clause. Otherwise, why not just start another company to keep busy?

Some good points here.

I both feel for him and think he's drowning in a cup of water.
First of all, he should seek help for his depression before it worsens, then he should start a new project, but as Minecraft growth made it uncomfortable for him , maybe he should start new projects, and if they become really big, sell them and start new ones.
If he signed some non-compete clause in gaming, until the clause expires he could start or help both developing and funding non-gaming projects.
