I'll gladly join your little corner :D I love that game.
As for the OP, Mario showed the way. It would be strange if no one else improved on it, but it doesn't change the fact that Mario started it.
So, historical impact/importance vs later-game-who-may-or-may-not-have-done-it-slightly-better
Its the same argument when people claim Ocarina of Time is the best game ever made. Games these days can certainly be better, but it is really difficult to be as important for the entire industry as Ocarina was. Depends on how you judge what is "better". I think we can all agree that they are good though :>
