I had a year of eq2 addiction... And a number of months of wow. I turned against mmo's and rpgs with lots of grinding and countless crappy subquests as a result.
Addictive games aren't necessarily the most fun. I often ask myself, when I'm rating a game, if I took a random snapshot of gameplay would it likely be a gameplay rich moment or my character slowly running across a large environment or participating in a mediocre quest as I'm grinding levels.
Platform games tend to score well in this test as good ones are always throwing engaging gameplay mechanics at you as you navigate around well designed levels. Splatoon also scores well with this test a you're always engaged in interesting gameplay of one sort or another.
I think this sort of illustrates where I'm at odds with the general gaming media.
