Hm. To be honest, I don't often go back and play older games, at least not any more. I used to play retro games constantly, but now I rarely go back and play games from before the late PS2-era.
I would have to say that I am still incredibly impressed by how innovative Chrono Trigger was.
I think Xenogears is the only retro game that still 'gets' to me, but not because of how it holds up, but because of it's 'meta-story.' It was a game that wanted to be the best game ever, but failed because Square decided to cut off its funding. It's always something engaging to think about how the game would have turned out if it was ever really completed. Also, it's soundtrack was incredible.
