I doubt FFXIV will ever overtake WoW any time soon, since that "5 million registered users" figure is somewhat misleading. Even those who only made an account to try the 14-day trial are counted towards that total. I'm sure the actual number of current subscribers is around or under 1 million.
If we counted all registered accounts for WoW, I'm sure that game has well over 20 or even 30 million registered accounts.

WoW is "free". They don't have to buy the main game or the expansions.
They have to buy the time card.
It costs 5 US dollars for 66 hours.
