Industry specialists have been very vocal that the movie Iron Man will be a major bust in it's opening weekend, all thanks to a videogame named Grand Theft Auto 4. To get caught up, here's one such article:

With the early release figures for Iron Man being $104 million for it's three day weekend, making it the 10th largest opening ever, and the second largest opening of a non-sequel(behind Spiderman). With only the release of Speed Racer to stand in front of it in week two, it should see another #1 weekend, giving it some good legs.
Now as for GTA IV, it also is having a monster week, and should easily having the best opening week ever for a videogame. Here is the latest on that:
Supposedly first day sales in America topping 2.5 million, and Euro sales topping 600,000. Both record breaking numbers.
Now for the discussion. With both game and movie seeing huge success this weekend, is it fair to assume that both can live independent of eachother, or is there still argument to be had where one is eating off of the other and taking sales? While industry specialists are predicting a bigger week for GTA IV in sales, one has to remember that Iron Man has to sell 6 tickets for every one GTA IV sold to match it's sales, so it's expected that GTA IV can match and exceed a sixth of the fanbase of Iron Man.
I believe both can still see huge sales, and most of the declining movie sales in recent years has more to do with advancing home entertainment options than another medium taking over the minds of consumers. What are your thoughts?
