Another movie I really enjoyed not that long ago was Little Children. It's not at all what you expect.
In case they haven't been thrown out there yet, I'll also toss in Eastern Promises and History of Violence. Viggo Mortenson has impressed me a lot lately. I really liked History of Violence though it's better if you go into the movie knowing nothing about it. The entire movie just blindsides you that way.
