Not to long ago, you posted in Ferret's emigration thread that you would be interested in emigrating. That might be your best option. Well, you don't necessarily need to change country, but maybe move to a different state.
A move would mean the possibility to reinvent yourself and to separate yourself from people who put you or keep you in a certain category.
Maybe find a place near a park, so you can go roller blading or jogging, or just hanging out in the park to read and listen to music and meet the regulars who do the same and make non-sketchy friends.
Whatever you chose to do, good luck with it.
Oh and why do you work in a grocery store? You would seem perfect as a record store clerk. :)
