The Xbox brand only had a modicum of good will outside of USA and UK to start with. Then their anti-consumer policies killed off a lot of that good will permanently, making any sort of recovery outside of the USA and UK very unlikely.
Compare with PS3. The Playstaion brand at the end of Gen 6 was much stronger than the Xbox brand at the end of gen 7. Consumers were pissed off at Sony because of the PS3's price and because Sony was rather dismissive of negativity towards the price. They arrogantly assumed people would jump on PS3 at any price. But that was really PS3's only problem. Price notwithstanding PS3 was still a pretty consumer friendly device: full backwards compatibility, built in Wifi, every PS3 came with a HDD, a Blu-ray player that played Blu-ray movies, free online, and stronger hardware if you knew how to get the most out of it. This means PS3 was in a good position to have a better middle and end of the generation. Basically Sony didn't try to screw over the gamers. Even the price wasn't screwing over the gamers, because they were taking a big loss themsleves to deliver it to consumers at a barely manageable price as opposed to a totally out of reach price. Everything that made the PS3 outrageously too expensive was in principle useful to the consumer.
With Xb one, the price was pretty much the least of Xb one's problems in the time between announcement and launch. MS's main problem was that they were looking to screw over gamers with some of their policies, and when you try to force shit down someone's throat and tell them its candyfloss you lose trust completely. There is far less willingness to forgive and forget with what MS did with Xb one compared to what Sony did with PS3.
So, despite the 180, the dumping of Kinect and the drop in price, MS are continuing to reap what they sewed back in 2013, and that will likely last through the whole generation.
