As far as I remember, there is absolutely zero benefit to using daggers over thief swords. It's just at times the more powerful weapon will be a dagger, and at other times, it will be a thief sword. They didn't really balance the two out by giving daggers a speed bonus or anything, which is admittedly a little disappointing, but I never gave it more than a few seconds of thought.
