Well I didn't personally think anything of the joke, but some people might have been offended by it. Making jokes about people dying isn't necessarily bad but it is pretty risky and more often than not you are going to get people that don't like it. It's usually one of those topics that you really need to know the people you're talking to before going for jokes like that, if you're with a group of friends or like-minded people then it's more likely to be well received that putting it out in the open for everyone.

I agree it's risky, but I think that's kind of the result you get, when a subject(s) are deemed 'off-limits'.  Know what I mean?  And yeah, I agree, some jokes you would only risk saying to close friends who understand your sense of humor.
