I think Hollywood has warped the whole concept of nice guy.
Relationship point of view it is all about gelling together with a person. Sometime maturity is a big factor, when two people are at different stages of their life they just won't gell as they looking for other things that excite them.
As for work, generally the person who can put up with the bullshit of office politics and play the game will win.
