Fox News and the Republican base have not learnt from the mistakes of the past. Many of them honestly believe that a far right candidate can win the White House whereas most observers can plainly see that they need to moderate their views to win over swing voters.

Didn't they try that with Mitt Romney and McCain (both are moderate, establishment republicans?)

Besides, Trump IS a moderate (or rather an incoherent politcally.) He has been on record for promoting Universal Healthcare, heavy taxes, gun control, and supported Hillary Clinton. He went from being a Republican, to a Democrat, to an Independent, to a Republican again. The only way he is extreme is in how moderate and establishment he is - aka Fascist-esque like the last several U.S presidents, but more outspoken about it.
