Ah, ain't that funny?
We (western governments and especially the US) supported dictators for decades. Back in the cold war the Soviets did the same.
Might actually have been better if they hadn't started supporting regimes, then 'freedom fighters'* etc.
*freedom fighter: Does what you want, terrorist does the opposite
