In star ocean 3 you could set special moves based on which button you held, I think it's the same here, then you could also link special attacks into a personal chain, or chain with your allies.

From what I've read, TOSE simply reused the engine for the second game for both remakes, so they play exactly like that one but with some extras thrown in.

Yep , they are almost exact replicas . The only difference is that the PSP version has some updated visuals and cinematics ...

I don't mind since I never played the first or second games, only the third one
