LittleBigPlanet sold absolutely horrendous in Japan. Sure it being Mario Maker it will do better but Japan really doesn't seem into games like that. I wouldn't expect to much from it in Japan.

Japan has one of the biggest ROM-hack communities in the world, if not the biggest one. LBP was just a great editor with some not always good gameplay tacked on. Meanwhile, Super Mario Maker is basically 4 extended ROMhacks in one. And 2D Mario Games are probably the most hacked games ever. Kaizo Mario World, where the name Kaizo trap originates, is probably the most iconic example, but there are tons of other such hacks. And they even incorporated some ideas not even those Romhackers came opon to or couldn't make like that back then, like the coin projectiles or Spiny Shell as helmet
