Because thats how headline news works. It gets people to ignore other issues. All people are worried about and talking about right now is a single animal. Meanwhile, this causes people to donate money, etc to causes that prevent this, instead of to more important things, like kids who never get the opportunity for a good learning experience, or women getting raped way too often.

I've seen similar posts in Facebook starting something to the effect of: "While you're focused on this, this other thing is happening." Well, I can focus on 2 things at the same time y'know. My commenting on Cecil, Drake vs. Meek Mil, Ronda Rousey, etc. doesn't distract me from poverty, starvation, rape, mass murder, and suffering. If I'm walking down the street and I stop to tie my shoe I don't forget which street I'm on.
