@Lawlight - If we think about the real reason why we -as humans- decided to build civilizations... It’s not because we wanted the sweet smoke and radiation. It’s because we wanted to survive.
We are not well suited for the raw environment. If an artificial intelligence entity ever reaches the singularity in this scenario, what will make more sense, to emulate the human form or to adapt to the environment.
Honestly I believe that the most efficient form will be a colony of ants or bees like organisms, or even a "life form" that we have never seen before.
But basically what the developer is trying to say is that the robots did not die in the apocalypse. Instead they found a way to adapt to the rough and ever evolving environment, and that they did it by taking primitive animal forms.
