Basically it's the wrong game for the platform, so really no surprise. Core nintendo fans seem to be not interested in this type of racer, and as Wii U pretty much only has core Nintendo fans buying it the sales potential was low to start with. Add in the fact that the game can't possibly look as good as it does on the other platforms and there is really nothing that can sell the game to Wii U owners. And for those who have more than one platform a Wii U version has about a 0.1% chance of being the version such people will buy.

It was the right decision to can it, but it was a wrong decision to put Wii U into the mix in the first place. 3rd parties have to be smart about what games they target at the Wii U. They basically need to thread the needle of making games that appeal to this specific demographic, but at the same time not simply make knock offs of Nintendo franchises. You don't release 'Hyper Maria Sisters' on Wii U and expect it to sell.

can't really say that when they never had one in the first place since Nintendo never made one lol.

I'm assuming Nintendo knows its core audience well, which is why it's only made kart racers.
