My personal experience as an ex employee of Konami back in their heydays (Back when i was still a lowly dime a dozen programmer!) is basically this.
Kojima and the games he made became their bread and butter outside of mobile and arcade games, regardless of how much time Kojima spent on games of the fox engine, as such an integral part of the companies portfolio, he was well worth it.

This attitude from Konami follows through with the attitude of several months of near-lunacy PR moves and industry choices by Konami towards it's own staff and stinks to me of pinning all of their problems and their 2015 bad press on Kojima and his team as a means to lump responsibility away from themselves.

Kojima wanted to try new things away from Metal gear, but had little choice because Konami wanted their metal gear milk money and they wanted it now, Kojima ventured into salvaging the bastardized silent hill franchise but Konami saw this as distracting from the goal of getting MGSV on to shelves and started systematically restricting the team to funnel them in to doing only what they wanted done, do a point where things fell apart.

And now they have fallen apart, and Konami are going to spend the new several months on the defensive "revealing" various "issues" that paint anyone but themselves in a bad light to salvage whats left of their brand.

Frankly, Konami can feck off and go bankrupt, let it's IP's be picked up by more capable companies who are willing to make the proper initial investment on projects.
