I'll say this, last gen there were only 3 games I played (aside from playing with my son for his enjoyment) on consoles. SSBMelee, Burnout and GTA:SA. I like all of them because they are perfect casual games, you could play for 5 minutes or 50 minutes.
No I never did a single mission - ever. Just screwed around with cheats and seeing how long I could avoid police - effectively making time my score that I was trying to beat. GTA was also one of the only games my daughter played - along with her friends.

GTAIII may not have been intended as a 'casual' game, but it sure was embraced by 'casual' players because you never had to do anything at all if you didn't want to. NO SKILL of any kind was required to have fun. It was a perfect game for people with little skill, little time, and little interest is most games. Which is the very definition of a 'casual' game.

As for GTAIV - haven't played it. Good chance I'll never play it. So can't comment on it one way or the other.
