What is the problem with hospital costs in the U.S? - here is the cost of a Snake bite!

Must have been a pretty bad bite. My brother was recently in a very severe car accident and he doesn't have any insurance. Broke both arms and dislocated both shoulders, huge lacerations everywhere and extensive damage to his face and one of his eyes. His bill came in around 50k.
