Well, as someone who started on pokemon crystal back in the day (I had played bits and pieces of red and blue on a friends gameboy before, but that doesn't really coun't imo) I'm biased, but have to recommend the heartgold/soulsilver remakes.
They are extremely well done and offer all the modern gameplay conveniences without sacrificing anything that made the originals awesome. They also had the best rival of all Pokemon games imo and the story, while simple compared to later entries in the series, hit the sweet spot between grand and believable for me. It's also one of the meatiest pokemon campaigns to date, and in my opinion sort of offers you the best of all worlds. (Not to mention the awesome twist at the 'end' of the game.)

If that's not really you cup of tea, I'd say you will be fine just picking up X/Y and if you like Pokemon just work your way through the older games from there. What's nice about X/Y is the customizability of your avatar, the super easy trading options, if you wanted to get into that and that they are very accessible to newcomers in general.
