I have no children, but I know my nephew recently started asking his Mom about a PS4 or PC that can play games. Wii U isn't even on his 10 year old radar so I would imagine he'd feel like I wasn't listening to what he wanted. Any explanation that he should be happy with what ever he gets would ring a little hollow because not what he asked for.
I think too often as we grow up we become convinced that our likes are "right" so our younger relatives or children should embrace them. Then I remember my Dad never even cared about video games and preferred hunting/fishing/golfing as hobbies and while he encouraged them on me he bought me a Super Nintendo for Christmas instead of a rod and reel or 3 wood like he would have preferred.
Comic I think touches on this.
