It's worth noting that while a deal like this can reduce the potential long-term profitability of a game because of 'lost' sales, it can also dramatically reduce the risk involved (or even completely mitigate it if Sony gave them more than the developer's total investment in the project, which i'd guess was the case here). That alone can make such deals very appealing.

Regardless, without knowing how much it would have sold without the PS+ edition (or how many copies the developer was hoping to sell), there's not much point in a debate like this. We don't have the details we'd need to make any kind of guess at the worth of the deal to both parties.
