That is a rather arbitrary way of looking at it. You could also look at it and say they have been outsold by Microsoft two of the three generations Microsoft has been around. Also, the past is the past, currently Nintendo is doing much worse than Microsoft and that is why you get the comments you get. Not to mention the fact that Nintendo has trouble getting support for their platforms from anybody else but themselves and Microsoft doesn't. I can see all sorts of arguments that make a lot more sense as to why people would think Nintendo should get out of the hardware business.
personally, I don't think they should. I am pretty happy with the balance as it stands. I think a three way competition is best for the industry.
