New Super Mario Bros. games don't have a huge budget, they're probably a lot cheaper than Rayman Legends. Kirby and Donkey Kong games sold over 2 million copies last gen. That's a long while now?
There hasn't been a 2D Metroid game since 2004, so of course it has been awhile. And that was just a remake.
There is a thread here about Mighty No. 9 and how it was difficult to port to the Wii U and that game doesn't have demanding visuals either.
