the Wii U is where it is now because of marketing and design
when you label something the next in line aka 'Wii 2' then people naturally expect a similar system (which the Wii U is not remotely like the Wii). not only that but in terms of marketing Nintendo did not push the system at all upon release- they thought that it would sell itself. unfortuantely the title of the system was terrible, and simply adding a 'U' after the word Wii did not resonate with buyers or really inform them that it was something new
lastly the gamepad was an abysmal decision, players don't want to constantly look at their lap to play a game and they just don't CARE for the added feature when they can press start/select and easily reach a map or menu anyway
the Wii U partially may have failed due to a bad game lineup but as much of that is Nintendo's fault as third parties- the 1st party game lineup has been sparse and weirdly timed. they released the system with virtually NO big titles. had they came out with the Wii U and a Zelda game + Mario Kart - BAM it would have sold great
just total failure on marketing and design. the third parties aren't responsible for the Wii U failing, Nintendo is
