I did notice they added some WRPG-esque elements to the game, which are nice. Sandbox games desperately needed some kind of real choice given the open nature of the genre.
Still, I don't think that's enough. The violence, and lack of repercussion for causing it, is still there in its full glory.
Although that first execution was pretty good stuff. I thought that scene held some real significance and emotion. The problem is that scenes like that only make the lack of emotion in the non-mission parts of the game stand out more prominently.
