Nintendo are in a really bad position with NX because of the Wii U. The Wii U was underpowered compared to the PS4 and Xbox One so it did not get a majority of 3rd party games and developers quickly stopped developing for it because they didn't want to downgrade their games, which led to a huge software drought since a lot of first party games weren't there on time. All of this led to the Wii U not having good sales and now they are quickly just trying to move on from it with NX.

Now here's the thing. Let's say they launch the NX in like 2016-2017 and that it IS a home console and not a handheld. The PS4 and Xbox One launched in 2013 so that would be their 4th-5th year in the cycle. The NX would obviously be considered a part of the 9th gen consoles, but what happens when the PS5 and Xbox Two release and the NX might be way too underpowered compared to them again because it released earlier. It will be the exact same situation as the Wii U.

I know this is kind of too early to say since we should wait till the NX is actually revealed first and what it actually is, but still. This situation could very easily happen again if Nintendo don't think about it properly.
