To be fair, you're comparing games that have been out for years to a game that came out a few months ago (according to VGC numbers).
It will end up being one of the poorest selling Kirby titles, but that's unsurprising given Kirby Canvas Curse on the DS didn't sell too well either. 500k+ should be doable.
Edit: As someone who's played the game, it is quite good but the controls are very unique and take some time to get used to. It's also a game that relies on the gamepad, so that can turn some people off. The aesthetics are amazing though.
