It cost a lot more money back then to manufacture 5 million Atari cartridges than it does to manufacture 5 million game discs today, the rights to the E.T. license was also huge, and finally the $536 million figure included some hardware losses as well since they to slash the 2600 price many time to keep competitive (they were many different consoles out back then [at least a dozen], not just 3 like we have now).
