I think instead of leaving it to 3rd parties Valve should have made the steammachines themselves - maybe 2 models for medium and high performance and release a new line up all 2 years
that way devs could make an optimized setting for those machines and some may even use them as target specification if they sell a couple of million
btw I could see MS going that way with essentially a PC Xbox they refresh all 2 years (ofcourse 100% backwards and upwards compatible until the hw is simply too weak even for minium settings)
