it was then later discovered that these rebels were collaborating with al-qaeda... you know the guys that were the supposed to be a big threat before ISIS?

Arming rebels to topple unwanted regimes are an old practice by the US.

If the rebels choose to ally with different sides, at what fault is the US? And Al-Qaeda didn't rebrand ISIS, they denied any involvement with them.
