The Last of Us. This was a peculiar situation.
I thought it would be better. I played it on PS3 and I wasn't impressed at all. After the initial amazing intro, the game jumped ahead like 20 years and sucked. The graphics weren't that great, either. The character models were good, though. I quit playing it. Then.....
In 2015, I got the rerelease for PS4. It was the same game! Naughty Dog said it would look so much better but the resolution bump and frame rate enhancement were barely noticeable. Then, something happened. It got good.
And after a little while longer, it got better.
By winter, I was like "Holy shot! This game is freaking amazing!". The hype was justified.
