I understand the mechanisms and reasoning that lead to this, I just think it's utter nonsense. You're supposed to compete against your fellow members of the human race, not some ill-defined "ethnicity" that you're assigned to.

They outwork the other "races" academically and score high when tested for their efforts... that's precisely how it should be, and you ought not be punished for over achieving.

I agree, but the special interest groups for Hispanic and African-Americans realize that if they try to fix this problem then they would no longer have special priveleges for the ethnic group that they represent, so such a struggle would likely split progressives and liberals across lines. For that reason I think it is unlikely that it will happen anytime soon. Asian Americans will not get this fixed because their interest groups aren't as powerful as those of underrepresented minorities, and politicians wouldn't want to divide their constiencies.
