The problem with our rating system is that as soon as a game received a 10 it is impossible to get any higher.

What if Final Fantasy XIII is gonna be better than GTA IV?

In case of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the high review scores where valid. Many people saying "yeah, but Zelda also got a 10 so GTA IV can get one, too" are just too young to remember what a game Ocarina of Time was.

Not a single of it´s sequel was able to exceed the games pure awesomeness. When Ocarina of Time was released it changed the definitionon of gaming forever. Look at the lock on system in so many games - you know which game introduced a lock on system first, right? It was Ocarina of Time. The game also was the first to feature a complete world map you could explore all on your own - just like GTA.

When Ocarina of Time was release it was quite obvious there wouldn´t be another N64 game to top that as the game was just so revolutionary. It was impossible to even imagine there could be something bigger than Ocarina of Time and, yes: From an artisitc and gameplay standpoint the game is better than any Zelda release after it. It deserved a 10. I can´t see why GTA IV deserves a 10, though - unlike Ocarina of Time the game is a sequel to a well known series that existed in this way before. Ocarina of Time was something completely new, you couldn´t compare it to previous Zelda games.

I´m sure GTA deserves a score somewhere between 9.5 and 9.9 but not a 10. It´s just not revolutionary enough. It won´t change the definition of gaming forever. It will have a huge impact, though.
This post is so excellent that I am quoting it just to make it more likely to not be overlooked.  Whether or not GTAIV is being intentionally or unintentionally boosted in rating (hint: yes, unintentionally), this post explains wonderfully why GTAIV is in fact a little overrated and LoZ:OoT is not.

Thanks for quoting this Final-Fan.  I was skimming super fast, but at your recommendation, I read this.  Great post

Here's my 2 cents:

When Ocarina came out and blew my mind and revolutionized gaming with actual NEW GAMEPLAY ELEMENTS, I couldn't really think of potential improvements for a long time.

Here's how you can improve GTA4.  (These ideas are free RockStar, so go ahead and steal them.)

1: add a jet pack.

2: add a time machine.

3: ride a dinosaur.

4: portals

5: magic

Oh oops, you're stuck with "realism," which cancels out all the magical powers OF RUBANG'S IMAGINATION.

Good luck.
