They are quite different and try to do different things, but I would say that Nocturne and Strange Journey are as good at what they try to do as P4 is at what it tries to do. SMT X FE looks to take many hints from Devil Survivor and Persona though. The characters, story, context, and aestethics remind me a lot of Devil Survivor, while the social aspects and combat are much more Persona-like (fast-paced press-turn rather than slow-paced press turn.)
I think it has potential to be a great, yet also a different game from Persona 5. Of course I also think Persona 5 has the greater appeal to Western gamers with the style it is going for (which reminds me of the anime Darker than Black) being a much more popular anime-style in the West than SMTXFE's which is far more uniquely Japanese. Having said all of that, we still need to see more of Persona 5's gameplay. While I like that there is stealth involved, I hope it doesn't make a huge portion of the gameplay. We also need to see more of the social aspects, because in my opinion, that is what makes Persona games unique and interesting, as otherwise they'd be boring SMT games with bland dungeons that you grind in.
