the good thing is, most people are better people than those who wrote the bible.  

Human sacrifices used to exist to please gods. They don't anymore but morals based on that thinking would mean that people would be fine with someone being killed for as a human sacrifice. This is how religion can influence modern society, even if we moved beyond such things.
