Xbox 360 release 20.03.2006: Sold 4,2 mio copies

Ps3 release 20.3.2007: Sold 3 mio copies

Mass Effect 2:

Xbox 360 release 2010: Sold 3mio copies

ps3 release 2011: Sold 1,5 mio copies

 

BTW: Ps3´s installed hw base was even smaller at the release of oblivion. So it sold in relation even better as xbox 360 version.

Delayed releases do hurt the sales a bit, but they dont explain horrible wii u sales

They stopped making DLCs because of the horrible sales. First they really did a great job on wii u porting, but as sales where that horrible, they stopped putting much effort into their ports.

Games like bayonetta 1 were ported horrible on ps3 (1,2 mio sales). So bad ports dont effect sales much.

All that being said on the main topic, 3rd parties can be reasonably successful on the Wii U by making decent games that are exclusive to the platform. You saw some of that in the Wii era before most gave up because they weren't getting COD type numbers on the platform for certain genres. Which is funny because when making games on other platforms they still never got the COD type of numbers they seem to have been aiming for. But all that being said, giving some exclusive support on certain titles that would appeal to the Wii U's traditional following would have netted them some good sales.

The Wii´s Userbase was alot more different from the wii u´s. The wii was owned by alot different people (old people, none gamers, gamers, children) because of the innovative controls. The Wii U dont have thos innovative controls (at least they arnt the reason people do buy the console). The marketing of the wii was aimed at any kind of people, wii us marketing is aimed at children. Cant compare.
