Who is going to buy it if as you mention the Steambox does it? What makes you think that in a few years you wont just be able to stream the game on your ipad? Or just through your TV? If you dont need the box anymore, why would you buy it? Keep in mind that there is such a thing as competition aswell. Why would the consumer get an Xbox instead of a Playstation with the same games + exclusives they can only play in it?

I may also add that most Xbox exclusives are shooters and fit the PC quite nicely.

But I never said that XBox couldn't be a tablet in the future or some other device. But people like me and millions other will want to have a device connected to the TV that is plug-and-play, where you don't need to think about graphics drivers, more memory or the crap just to play a simple game. MS knows this and knows that my choice of a dedicated gaming machine instead of a gaming pc isn't because of the games, but rather the format. What MS has done instead is to focus on a unified OS that makes it possible for crossplay, crossbuy and creating a larger gaming community. When I was about ten and started gaming on Master system I heard your exact argument, yet console grew leaps and bounds because we represented a new segment of the gaming community.


And why would these millions want this device to be an Xbox? I agree that the market for console and PC are inherently different, but that isnt all that the Xbox goes against. You make the case that the console market will remain in existance, but not that it would remain on Xbox. If you could have a tablet that plays the Xbox exclusives or a PC for those that are fine with that, then the logical choice for the living room is either a Sony or Nintendo device with exclusive software you can't play anywhere else.

I think you are projecting the view of an Xbox fan on the whole spectrum of gaming, where you will play with all the options they give you. As you can see with the difficult time the X1 has in penetrating the EU and Japanese markets that that isnt going to work easily. Not everyone is willing to invest on all these devices, especially if they have the same use. It just makes no monetary sense.

I agree that it creates a larger community, but this community will come from the other platforms, otherwise we wouldnt even be having this conversation and MS would be totally happy with just the home box.
