Hey I'm late to the discussion, but no I don't believe the score is a reflection of a conspiracy against Nintendo. Not at all, GTA IV has been one of the most anticipated games ever and it didn't fail to live up to the hype or deliever everything that is promised.
That being said I kinda just feel like everyone is jumping on the 10 bandwagon. I mean yes we know that a 10 means that a game is not PERFECT but the reveiw scale is determined by what exactly? Personal opinions. It'd be easier if there was a univeral scale that we knew reviewers adhered to. But mostly it comes down to personal (passed off as professional) opinion.
I mean in my opinion SMG was a 10 hands down but I'm looking at the game and how it's evolved from it's previous iterations. If I did the same with GTA IV I'd actually think that GTA: San Andreas was A LOT more groundbreaking overall and mostly due to scale and content than GTA IV. Now I'm only 30% into the game so that would be a bit premature. But that's how I felt when I read all the reviews and then played the game for myself.
I'd probably flip flop scores with GTA: SA and GTA IV, but all in all it doesn't matter, but it is weird when a game like this comes a long and the consensus is like 10 across the board, not even in the 9.5-10, but 10, and SMG is considered a 9.5 or a 9 to some.
And then there's Halo 3... LoL
