How is it a charity, when you pay $30, and get the game in return? Or pay more to get artbooks and other things that you want?
Do you think publishers were lining up outside of Yu Suzuki's door for the past 15 years, begging him to make Shenmue 3 for them? No one wanted to back it, because they didn't believe it would be profitable. Kickstarter is a way to gauge that the interest is actually there, and you get the game in return for supporting it. Because people claiming that they would buy it doesn't translate into actual sales. Developers know this full well.
