In my youth, I would have said RPG, no hesitation. But today...?

A 2D platformer with nice modern graphics, a few cut scenes that last 10 seconds at most, and a decent difficulty curve made brutal with old-timey design. (3 lives, rare checkpoints, rare 1-Ups, the 'easiest' way to get extra lives is getting a good score - yep, both a timer and a score.) No game saves, although the game would record your best progress and any unlockables and art found in-game. Beating the game would unlock a higher difficulty setting with a slightly different (and cooler) story. Beating that would unlock the hardest difficulty, which is where the 'true' story and ending would be found.

It'd probably star a mascot-looking creature who can do some basic melee (including a classic butt-stomp sort of thing) as well as an innate ability to use magic spells - mostly non-combat in nature, more for altering the environment to speed up or just make traversal of the landscape possible. This creature is defending its home planet from invading aliens (humans gone extra crazy in the future trying to expand the Earth Empire), and may end up picking up and using some of their futuristic guns for short bursts and some of the Contra-inspired boss fights.

....
Well, that was a waste of time. Back to reality.
