Captain Obvious!
The PS3 was one crazy machine and even before the announcement of the PS4 i never expected the sucessor to support BC. Neither PS3 nor 360 emulation on PC are a real thing but the 360 emulation is way further along, because it's doable, while PS3 is nigh impossible, and we're talking about computers much more powerful than PS4. Next generation though, if there are traditional consoles, both companies should have an easy time doing BC.
As to what Sony should do, there's only one thing. PS1 and PS2 BC. Reasons why it's more important than PS3 BC
- A PS4 user is more likely to have a PS3 in his house than a (working) PS1 and/or PS2.
- PS1+PS2 library has more rare, expensive-to-get titles, which some people have but may not be able to play on their current working systems.
- PS classics on PSN would become playable on PS4, including the ones you already bought to play on the PS3 but aren't available on PSNow.
- Nostalgia; self explanatory.
- Highly subjective opinion: screw last gen. Easily the worse in gaming history (so far), let's not dwell on it too much. The tremendous excitement over TLG, Shenmue and FF7 show that many people feel the same way.
- Bigger library; also self explanatory.
- If you're gaming right now, it's much more likely you missed out on PS1 and PS2 games than PS3 games. Or, in other words, you missed out on a lot more titles from those platforms than PS3 games.
- Also subjective, but me and many others would rather revisit games we haven't played in a long time than games we've completed (and maybe even platinumed to exhaustion..) in recent years.
- With the exception of the aforementioned rare titles, a lot of these games are even cheaper to get than cheap 360/PS3 games. Some people sell (used) collections at like 1 dollar a game.
