Both game franchises are huge and both originated in 1987.

Final Fantasy has a bigger lineage and is more popular than Zelda imo.

The problem with Zelda is the fact its limited as a first party title - due to that it suffers mainly in sales for that reason.

Popularity wise both are huge but I believe Final Fantasy has a bigger following due to the following of numerous types of characters , icons (chocobo and moogles), etc.

Not only that but the franchise has a bigger presence in the gaming market than Zelda due to the fact its a third party and on multiple systems.

Both franchises had their ups and downs though (i.e. FFCrystal Bearers, Zelda NDS games, etc)

A much better franchise to say that is indeed bigger than Final Fantasy would be Super Mario.

The question isn't which is bigger though, it's which is better.
