I stand by my point that seeing it as a cycle is a bit overdone. They only need to get it right once. Nintendo's consoles usually have a few unique selling points, but other decisions clearly hold them back. If Nintendo RED can make a very appealing product to all kind of gamers, it will sell regardless of Nintendo's reputation.
